Professional Member

Professional membership shall be available to any citizen or resident of Canada whose primary responsibility as a designer, educator or researcher is the field of industrial design, and;

1. Holds at least an undergraduate degree in industrial design from a course which is accredited by the Association, and,
2. Has attained five (5) years of experience as a designer, educator or researcher in the field of industrial design.
or,
1. Has attained a total aggregate of ten (1O) years of education and experience as a designer, educator or researcher in the field of industrial design, and,
2. Has submitted, to the satisfaction of the Association, three (3) Case Histories and/or Letters of Sponsorship.

Professional Members are entitled to:

  • Be issued national and provincial certificates, provincial stamp and accorded the title letters of ACID and ACIDO,
  • Attend Annual, Regular and Special meetings,
  • Vote at Annual, Regular and Special meetings,
  • Hold elected office of the Association,
  • Serve on committee of the Association,
  • Receive the Association’s minutes of its Board meetings, ACID and ICSID publications,
  • Be registered in the ACIDO directory as a Professional Member,
  • Receive free admission to all regular ACIDO programs and events,
  • Receive insurance and other benefit packages, as available,
  • Receive professional liability insurance package, as available,
  • Receive complimentary copies of professionally related periodicals, as available,
  • Receive memberships in the Association of Canadian Industrial Designers (ACID) and in the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID),
  • Receive information and benefits arising from programs promoted by or on behalf of the Association, ACID or ICSID.

Associate Member

Rocket Member

Rocket is ACIDO’s competition for graduating students of Industrial Design in Ontario. Rocket membership in the Association shall be available to any citizen or resident of Canada who is enrolled in the final year of a course of industrial design. This category is intended to make students aware of the association, its function and its goals, and to bring design students into the professional design community for the mutual benefit of both groups. Student Members are entitled to:

  • Attend annual, regular and special meetings,
  • Be appointed to serve on committee of the Association,
  • Receive the Association’s newsletters and minutes of its Board Meetings, ACID and ICSID publications,
  • Be registered in the ACIDO directory as a Rocket Member,
  • Receive free admission to all regular ACIDO programs and events,
  • Receive information concerning insurance and other benefit packages, as available,
  • Receive information and benefits arising from programs promoted by or on behalf of the Association, ACID or ICSID.
  • Upon graduation, all student members are invited to participate in the ROCKET Show held every year in May.

All Rocket memberships run from the time of joining (typically September of the student’s final year) to the end of December in the year following (typically about fifteen months). Rocket competition winners receive a one-year Associate Membership as part of their prize, beginning in January of the year following Graduation.

Student Member

Student membership in the Association shall be available to any citizen or resident of Canada who is enrolled in a post-secondary course of industrial design. This category is intended to make students aware of the association, its function and its goals, and to bring design students into the professional design community for the mutual benefit of both groups.

Student Members are entitled to:

  • Attend annual, regular and special meetings,
  • Be appointed to serve on committee of the Association,
  • Receive the Association’s newsletters and minutes of its Board Meetings, ACID and ICSID publications,
  • Be registered in the ACIDO directory as a Student Member,
  • Receive free admission to all regular ACIDO programs and events,
  • Receive information concerning insurance and other benefit packages, as available,
  • Receive information and benefits arising from programs promoted by or on behalf of the Association, ACID or ICSID.

Membership Fees

A cheque for the full amount applicable to your membership category, payable to ACIDO, must accompany the application. The cheque will not be cashed until the Membership Committee approves the application. Membership fees for persons who are admitted as members after the beginning of a calendar year shall be pro-rated quarterly. Subsequent year end billings (as of December Ist) will represent dues for the full year.

All December 1st invoices are payable not later than January 31st of every calendar year. This is to allow members enough time to forward their cheques in advance of the Annual General Meeting. Professional Members who pay in full are considered in good standing and are therefore eligible to vote at the A.G.M. Any Professional Member who has not paid as of March 1st will be formally notified that they are not in good standing and will forfeit all privileges accorded within the By-laws of the Association including the use of the Professional Stamp of the Association.

A member whose membership fees remain unpaid at the end of a calendar year shall be deemed a non-member, will forfeit all affiliation with the Association and immediately surrender his/her professional stamp and membership certificate to the secretary of the Association. A former member whose membership has been terminated shall not have the right to display an ACIDO sign at his place of business or to use the name or initials of the Association.
