Jay Sobel

With 30 years of practice, Jay Sobel brings a diversity of leadership experiences championing end-user needs across platforms in the telecommunications, defense, healthcare & consumer product industries. Ventures in these fields have led to the development of a bevy of meaningful products and a personal portfolio of 27 patents and 33 awards. His hobbies include all things lacrosse, raising prize winning dogs, and design education as a Part-time Faculty Member at Sheridan and Centennial Colleges.

Championships at the provincial, national and international levels over a span of 42 years spent playing and coaching individual and team sports have taught Jay Sobel to be a secure individual, a confident leader, and an effective partner in realizing team goals. Jay considers himself fortunate to have been able to participate in many exciting projects while collaborating with other creative individuals, technical experts, and world class organizations including: the ROM, CHEO, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force, the Ottawa Police Force, the Royal Military College, and the Canadian Armed Forces. These efforts have resulted in the production of meaningful environments and the manufacture of compelling products that have helped peoples across the globe live more safely (personal protective equipment for First Responders, Police Officers and the Armed Forces); communicate with each other more efficiently (telecommunications network infrastructure equipment deployed in the Central Office, Customer Premises and Outside Plant environments); play more effectively (sports equipment and playground equipment for disabled children); and enjoy an improved quality of life (hospital environments, hospital room furniture, outdoor environments, medical products, industrial products and consumer products).

Jay has an "Honours" Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree "With Distinction". Grounded in Human Factors, Design Process and Industrial Design, he has worked on behalf of: Teknion, Keith Muller Ltd., Parkin Architects Ltd.; the world renown Design Interpretive Studio at Bell-Northern Research Ltd.; The Corporate Design Group at Nortel Networks Corp.; the Engineering Design Department at Newbridge Networks Corp.; the Industrial Design Department at Alcatel Canada Inc.; the Engineering Design Department at Med-Eng Systems Inc.; as a Consulting Industrial Designer for Design 1st Inc. and Spark Innovations Inc.; The MIBRO Group as Manager of Industrial and Graphic Design for ; and independently for numerous clients in private enterprises.

Jay is especially proud of acquiring intellectual property and/or design awards for products developed in every market segment that he has designed for. He is responsible for inventing the enclosure system for an Optical Network Unit and the Visual Indication System for said device delivering multi-media services to remote geographic areas which allowed Alcatel to acquire its first ever Japanese and Chinese Utility Patents! Jay and colleague Ray Woo were the first to ever receive the "Business Planning Management Award for Industrial Design Excellence" from Newbridge Networks Corp. He shares an Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) GOLD Industrial Design Excellence Award and two IDSA SILVER Industrial Design Excellence Awards for telecom product designs shared with colleagues at the former Alcatel, Nortel and BNR Ltd.
