Michael Phillips Brodey
I have been a creative and innovative Industrial Designer for 51 years since graduating from OCA in 1968. I worked in England as a product designer before returning to Canada. Throughout my career, I have worked for various companies in package design, product development, and merchandising. Since 2006, I’ve worked at Telegraph Road as Creative Director on a variety of educational and activity book products. In my next 50 years, I plan to continue utilizing the creative process.
At Canware Ltd., a lock and door manufacturing company, I solved function issues with the lock mechanisms.
For Atlantic Packaging Company Ltd., I integrated graphics and package design, and corporate image programs for such companies as Knob Hill Farms and Highland Farms. For employee health and safety, I recommended the painting of the manufacturing facility ceilings white to reduce shadowing resulting in increased safety around equipment and machinery.
As Product Development Manager at Coles Book Stores Ltd., I developed and designed new stationery products, managed the sign print shop, and designed signage for 150 stores. I redesigned and created new stationery office products to meet those needs of the growing school, home and office market.
At EKCO Housewares, I managed and designed brush products for their Brushware Division.
Returning to Coles Book Stores in 1984, I created product displays and helped integrate new sectional fixtures into all the Canadian stores.
At The Design Department Inc., I focused on packaging and graphic design.
At HBC/Zellers, I developed and designed new Zellers private brand packaging for consumer electronic lines, Ascent, Hype, stationery, Paper Plus, Gloria Girl, liaised with offshore suppliers and in-house teams to deliver private label projects. I was also involved in implementing new customer service ideas that involved Head Office employees working in the stores at the peak seasonal times and oversaw and maintained brand image and packaging. With my assigned brands, I coordinated all phases of production and off-shore communication.
As a Designer and Creative Director at Telegraph Road, I developed and designed book products for children and adults in the leisure, educational, and activity market. I created Canadianized colouring books under the Disney brand, Kids Activity books under Crayola brand, and Math, Phonics and Early Learning Skills in Max & Ruby and The Backyardigans under the Treehouse brand. Along with all the educational workbooks, I designed Deluxe Learning Kits, mock-ups, renderings, and displays. I streamlined production with the aid of a software developer, designing and producing Sudoku books – we have sold over 7 million books. This position gave me the opportunity to tie all of my education, skills, abilities, and vast experiences into a most satisfying and productive position.
