Ember: Pop-Up System for Enhancing Community Space
Thriving outdoor community spaces are essential for creating resilient and well-connected communities, however many public spaces in Canada go underserviced and underutilized.
Ember is a modular system for transforming these public spaces and helping local governments make impactful improvements. Ember is composed of interactive seating structures that can be temporarily deployed in community spaces such as parks, plazas, or courtyards. For a period of a few weeks, the structures use built-in sensors to create an inviting and dynamic environment of shimmering lights. Once the system has left the space, the anonymous usage data is made public to reveal community trends that can help inform future government actions.
About the Designer
Alex Whiteley, Carleton University
I believe the best design work takes advantage of both creative, out-of-the-box thinking and a grounded, problem-solving mindset. In my work, I try to merge aspects of design with aspects of art to create projects that strike a balance between logic and emotion.
